iPhone to feature special YouTube player

Apple's made it official: the iPhone will have full-blown YouTube integration. According to the iPhone Web site, the much-anticipated handset will include "a special YouTube player that you can launch right from the home screen." iPhone owners can now load and browse videos from the video-sharing site as well as e-mail them to their friends.

This comes less than a month after Steve Jobs announced that the company's Apple TV set-top box would also have built-in integration for the wildly popular YouTube.

The iPhone, as we all know by now, hits stores at 6 PM ET on June 29. That's next Friday!

iPhone users, have you noticed how cool and simple is the built-in calculator? It seems Apple has borrowed an idea from the old 1970’s Braun ET44 calculator. I wouldn’t call it a steal, as I’m not quite sure these sort of things are possible to protect with a patent. Apple simply used the best practices for its device and the result is a simple calculator with familiar look and feel. Nicely done!

Louis Vuitton releases first luxury iPhone cases

This wasn’t on the iPhone Bingo card, but it should have been. Where there’s an extremely coveted gadget, there’ll be an extremely expensive luxury case for it. Louis Vuitton has announced a set of four iPhone cases: Monogram Canvas, Taiga Leather, Epi Leather and Alligator Skin. The Taiga Leather one has a belt attachment on it, but all of the cases are pretty inconvenient, because you’ve got to pull the iPhone all the way out to actually use it.
Oh, and we’ve saved the best for last. Want to guess prices? The Monogram Canvas case will only set you back a measly $225, while the Alligator Skin case is twice the price of the actual iPhone: $1120. All the cases will be available tomorrow at Louis Vuitton’s Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan.

Apple is still considering to allow third-party software to run on the iPhone

One additional tidbit from Apple’s shareholder meeting notes was a revealing blurb that Apple still hadn’t completely decided whether or not they will open the iPhone software to 3rd party developers.
Jobs did acknowledge that the company is still struggling to decide if third-party developers will be able to create software that will run on the iPhone. It’s a decision Apple “is wrestling with,” according to Jobs.
Apple’s choice to limit iPhone development has been the target of a lot of criticism against the iPhone. In the days after the iPhone announcement, Jobs stated that while you will be able to purchase and install additional applications on the iPhone, that this would be limited and in a “controlled environment”. As a result, the iPhone has been described as a “closed device” which could make enterprise market penetration difficult.

Just in case you missed Walt Mossberg’s sitdown with Steve Jobs earlier today, but in the open Q&A his Jobsness was asked point blank about the openness of the iPhone, and whether users can expect their $600 cellphone to be able to add on third party iPhone software and apps. His reply?“This is an important tradeoff between security and openness. We want both. … we’ll find a way to let 3rd parties write apps and still preserve security on the iPhone. But until we find that way we can’t compromise the security of the phone. … I’ve used 3rd party apps… the more you add, the more your phone crashes. No one’s perfect, and we’d sure like our phone not to crash once a day. If you can just be a little more patient with us I think everyone can get what they want.”You heard it folks, Apple’s working on allowing third party devs into the hallowed ground of the iPhone. One big issue (kind of) down, now we’ve just got to work on getting that thing a real keyboard and some 3G.

iPhone Can’t Support Adobe Flash But Can Play Youtube Videos

Coming out of WWDC are reports that Apple has officially admitted that the Apple iPhone will not support Adobe’s Flash plug-in in Safari.

Flash support has been a long unanswered question about the Apple iPhone. Steve Jobs had made comments early on that we might see Flash in iPhone according to David Pogue

Markoff: “Flash [in the iPhone]?”Jobs: “Well, you might see that.”Of note, Jobs did say that Youtube support would be in the iPhone… but by sidestepping Flash altogether:
Jobs: “Yeah, YouTube—of course. But you don’t need to have Flash to show YouTube. All you need to do is deal with YouTube. And plus, we could get ‘em to up their video resolution at the same time, by using h.264 instead of the old codec.”
This portion of Jobs’ plan came true with the Youtube addon for Apple TV which will require Youtube to convert their catalog of videos into the h.264 format.

• Confirmed in-line viewer for PDFs, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel docs in email. Microsoft complained about lack of support before.w This is a huge deal, even if it is read-only.
• Turning off the phone requires you to slide your finger across the top (like unlocking it) to confirm.
• You can rewind voicemail like a sound file.
• You can finger-scroll through contacts using the alphabet on the right.
• The special iPhone headphones have volume and call control.
• IMAP/POP support confirmed• Typing with two thumbs actually looks manageable

The iPhone, as Jobs proudly dubbed the device to thunderous applause ,will be three devices in one: a cell phone, a wide-screen iPod with touch controls, and an Internet communications device. Cingular is the lucky carrier (apparently the companies have patched up their relationship following the Motorola Rokr bust).
We haven’t gotten to hold an iPhone yet, but we’re just as excited as the next person to finally write down our first thoughts, and we won’t sleep until we get our hands on one. Check back near the iPhone’s June release date for our full review.

Availability

As has been widely rumored for months, Cingular (soon to be AT&T) will be the sole iPhone carrier. Both Apple and Cingular stores will sell the phone starting in June. Europe will get it in the fourth quarter, and Asia will have to wait until next year. Finally, the U.S. gets something first!
Good thing we have a few months to save our pennies. The 4GB model will cost $499 with a two-year contract and $599 for the 8GB version (also with a two-year contract). Again, that’s a bit high when compared to other carrier-supported music phones such as the Sony Ericsson W810i, particularly since you’re locked into a iPhone contract with one carrier.
Design

To be successful, an Apple phone has to sport an iconic Apple design–the Rokr’s dull design did it no favors. Fortunately, Apple fulfilled our expectations this time with a smooth design and an innovative interface. Say goodbye to traditional cell phone buttons–this phone is all touch screen, all the time.
With only one hardware control (a “home” key), iPhone’s real estate is dominated by a huge, 3.5-inch display. From what we call tell, the device looks beautiful with a resolution of 320×480x160 pixels per inch (the highest iPod resolution yet, according to Jobs). The videos and photos look great, and we love that the “smart” screen shifts automatically to a landscape orientation when you start to play a video. One giant touch screen controls the phone, and no stylus is needed (”Yuck,” Jobs said). Use your fingers to type messages and e-mails on an onscreen keyboard–Jobs promises onscreen typing will be faster than on a standard smart-phone keypad, but we’ll believe that theory when we actually get a device in our hands. (And speaking of yuck, what about all that finger grease?) But we admit the scrolling feature looks especially promising as Jobs had only to slide his finger across the display.
Of course, such a large display makes for a large phone: the iPhone measures 4.5×2.4×0.46 inches. No, it won’t slide into smaller pockets, but it joins the similarly sized Palm Treo 750and its weight (4.8 ounces) is mostly standard for a handset of this size. Of course, the slim profile is noteworthy as well. We’re a tad surprised Apple has jumped on the thin phone bandwagon, but trim design, after all, is the cell phone trend of the day. As Jobs made clear, iPhone is thinner than both the Motorola Q and the Samsung BlackJack.
Features

Though we’re pleased Apple made it a quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) world phone, we’re disappointed the iPhone’s data support tops out at 2.5G EDGE networks. Considering the multimedia-friendly feature set, the omission of any 3G compatibility is a bit bizarre, particularly since Cingular now offers UMTS and HSDPA.
We wouldn’t normally spend much time on voice mail, but Apple pulled a new trick out of its hat with Visual Voicemail. Rather than forcing you to call your voice mail and waiting to browse through multiple messages to hear the one you want, Visual Voicemail displays all the messages you have in a list, similar to an e-mail in-box. All you have to do is select the message you want and listen away.
It’s tough to truly evaluate the iPhone’s capability as a music and video player without some hands-on experience, but a cursory look at the product shots and details gives us some idea; that, and the fact it’s closely related to the highly rated iPod music player iPod.In short, the iPhone is sure to offer an easy-to-use media playback interface, and the breadth of content offered by iTunes (its compatible service) ensures you’ll never be wanting for music or video files. Of course, the touch-screen interface will take some getting used to for users who are accustomed to the iPod’s Clickwheel.
The iPhone, which will be offered in 4GB and 8GB capacities (flash memory), doesn’t have any restrictions on how much of that memory you choose to fill up with media content–no 100-track limit, as is the case with the Motorola Rokr. The convergence device also takes a step away from its iPod brethren by offering a built-in mic for audio recordings. And unlike most cell phones, the iPhone offers a standard 3.5mm audio jack, which will work with all mainstream stereo headphones. There’s no FM radio but that’s nothing new from Apple.
One thing is for certain: the 3.5-inch wide-screen display is much better for full-length movie viewing than the 5G iPod’s comparatively paltry 2.5-inch screen. And Apple’s new partnership with Paramount really helps to fill out the movie category in iTunes. If there’s anything we have to complain about, it’s that the video player isn’t offered as a standalone device, sans the phone capability, (which is sure to mark up the premium on the price). Of course, if that happens, we’d like to see something above the max 8GB of memory. iTunes content and video load on the phone via a USB computer connection–unfortunately, as far as we know there are no wireless downloads–and the iPhone comes with an iPod connector.
Beyond the music player, the iPhone runs on Mac OS X and promises a 2-megapixel camera, a photo-management tool that rotates the display for landscape photos (like with videos), support for Google Maps, conference calling, a speakerphone, and text and multimedia messaging. We imagine there will be personal organizer applications as well, but Jobs kept mum on such fine details. Connectivity options also look promising with stereo Bluetooth (thankfully), Wi-Fi (a huge plus), POP3 and IMAP4 e-mail, and a Safari Web browser. The free push Yahoo e-mail app looks especially cool since we won’t have to wait for syncing with a PC.
The iPhone also comes with some unique sensors that detect how you’re using the phone and change the display accordingly. A proximity sensor knows when you bring the phone to your ear and then dims the screen and shuts off the touch screen. The ambient light sensor adjusts brightness and saves power, and the accelerometer knows when to switch between landscape and portrait orientation.
Outlook

After months of iPhone speculation, we were sick of the device even before it came out. But now, well, we have to admit it’s quite lovely. The vivid display is especially attractive, and we like the sleek, minimalist design. The touch screen may involve a learning curve, but we’re excited to try it out. The iPod functionality will no doubt draw many, and in particular, we’re glad to see world phone support, the Yahoo e-mail app, stereo Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi.
On the downside, we were hoping for wireless iTunes music downloads. And it’s too bad Apple stopped short of 3G support. Also, we’re hoping that Apple introduces a standalone touch-screen iPod without the phone element as not everyone will want a convergence device. And here’s the biggest caveat: Phones are only as good as the calls they make, so we’ll have to wait for our final assessment once we get a review product. As for battery life, Apple is promising five hours for calling or video and 16 hours in music mode.
Overall, however, and despite the high price, we predict an iPhone success. The iPhone will garner interest simply because it exists and, as such, has great potential to move music phones into the mainstream. Nokia’s Xpress music phones and Sony Ericsson’s Walkman handsets present a strong challenge on some level, but Samsung’s new Ultra Music probably stands to take the biggest hit if the two devices go head to head.

Apple confirmed iPhone ship date:Late June

Reuters reported that Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said on Wednesday the company’s iPhone is on track to ship in late June.
Oppenheimer also said that the gross margin of 35 percent the company turned in during its most recent quarter was “not sustainable” because component costs are not expected to remain as low as they had been.
“We look forward to shipping the iPhone in late June and are very excited,” he told Reuters in a telephone interview.
Apple’s iPhone has been surrounded in a thick cloud of hype ever since it was announced in early January. The phone was announced at MacWorld 2007 in January, but it was all the talk at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas which was being held at the same time.
From the beginning, Apple said that the iPhone would ship in June of this year and would be a Cingular Wireless (AT&T Wireless) exclusive phone. Late last month, a rumor about iPhone release date June 11 was reported by CNET. The launch would coincide with Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco which is slated to run from June 11 through June 15.
Things took an even more interesting turn when Apple announced that it would delay the launch of its OS X 10.5 Leopard operating from June until October. At the time, the iPhone was blamed for the delay. “iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS(R) X team,” said Apple on April 12.
Insiders at the Company manufacturing the Apple iPhone claim that iPhone quality problems are causing concen to the extent that the phone may be delayed to end of June or early July.
Hopefully Apple iPhone will ship on time as their CFO’ s words.

Apple iPhone will launch between June 15th and July 15th

Thanks BoyGenius, They got an official letter sent to all corporate AT&T employees.The letter disclosed that the Apple iPhone launch will take place on June 15th with the launch period extended until the 15th of July
While the mail didn’t confirm an exact iphone release date of June 15th, we can see that AT&T is preparing for “the biggest selling period we have seen in a few years”, because AT&T isn’t even approving their employees from taking any vacations during that timeframe.

Which date will be THE exact iPhone release date?

Let the speculation, uh, heighten. The iPhone has been FCC-approved and people have even started to covertly preorder it, so it’s got to be coming soon, right? The problem is, in the absence of an official release date, everyone and their brother is coming up with what they believe are reasonable release dates.
Since there are so many release date for the iPhone floating around out there, it’s probably worth taking a look at some of them and the reasoning behind them. Our first contestant is June 20, which was mentioned on CNBC’s On the Money show as being confirmed by a “telco analyst.” This date is backed up by the fact that iPhone sales and support training is running from May 30 to June 20, so it’s entirely possible that the iPhone is coming out once sales and support training is over.
Unfortunately, as Gizmodo points outthe “telco analyst” in question was actually just an employee at an AT&T store. Given my previous experiences regarding getting correct release dates from a store employee, I’d say the AT&T employees know about as much concerning the real date as I know about quantum mechanics. Gizmodo is offering two other iPhone release dates that they think are more correct: June 15, and June 12. June 15 is being given because some AT&T/Cingular employees will not be able to take vacation>for several weeks after that date.
Last but not least, there’s June 12. Gizmodo likes this one best, and I’m tempted to agree with them. The June 12 date has popped up a few times before and was apparently given by the Business Marketing Group to people who attempted to confirm it with them. It also follows Apple’s practice of releasing products on a Tuesday, but more importantly, the 12th is the Tuesday immediately following the WWDC Keynote speech. It’s entirely plausible that the iPhone could be launched at the keynote, but then again, June 12 isn’t really “late June” if you want to be particular about it. Apple may also want to use all the time they have to prepare the device, stores, and support for the launch.
It’s still impossible to say when the iPhone will really come out, but if you’re holding your breath for it, you can probably relax for at least another couple of weeks

Closing out his keynote address at Apple’s annual developers conference on Monday, chief executive Steve Jobs announced that iPhone will not go on sale until the early evening of June 29th.

Jobs told a crowd of developers in San Francisco that the inaugural Apple handset would be available beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 29th, but did not specify whether that time was pacific time, eastern time, or local regional time.

Representatives for Apple did not respond to inquiries seeking clarification.

It was previously assumed that the device would be made available through Apple and AT&T retail stores in the early morning hours.

The later timeframe appears to have been selected as part of a broader bid by the Cupertino-based Apple to entice a media frenzy with large crowds, in which those with day jobs are not at a disadvantage when it comes to snagging an iPhone on day one.

Reports as to how many iPhones will actually be available on June 29th have ranged from less than 40 per AT&T store to 3 million in total. The device is due to go on sale at approximately 1800 AT&T locations in addition to over 170 Apple retail stores.

OS X? Which Version?

It is anounced by Apple when the iPhone is released that iPhone is based on OS X system, which has been anounced as the most advanced operating system.
“This software completely redefines what you can do with a mobile phone”, said by Jobs.
iPhone is fully multi-tasking, based on OS X, so you can read a web page while downloading your email in the background. Apple isn’t saying, although when we asked a company executive if it was a weird, not-really-OS-X version of OS X, he replied: “This is OS X.”
To be more specific, it’s a version of OS X that’s been optimized for the iPhone hardware.
Apple’s statements lead us to believe that the iPhone runs a mostly recognizable version of OS X under the hood.

The iPhone allows conferencing, call holding, call merging, caller ID, and integration with other cellular network features and iPhone functions. For example, a playing song fades out when the user receives a call. Once the call is ended the music fades back in.
The iPhone includes a Visual Voicemail feature in conjunction with AT&T which allows users to view a list of current voicemail messages on-screen, without having to call into their voicemail. Unlike most other systems, messages can be listened to in a non-chronological order, by choosing messages from an on-screen list. AT&T modified their voicemail infrastructure to accommodate this new feature designed by Apple.

The layout of the music library differs from previous iPods, with the sections divided more clearly alphabetically, and with a larger font. Similar to previous iPods, the iPhone can sort its media library by songs, artists, albums, videos, playlists, genres, composers, podcasts, audiobooks, and compilations. The Cover Flow, like that on iTunes, shows the different album covers in a scroll-through photo library. Scrolling is achieved by swiping a finger across the screen.
Like the fifth generation iPods introduced in 2005, the iPhone can play video, allowing users to watch TV shows and films. Unlike other image-related content, video on the iPhone plays only in the landscape orientation, when the phone is turned sideways. A two-fingered tap is used to switch between the video's true wide-screen aspect ratio (with black bars on the top and bottom of the screen) and a zoomed mode (to fill the iPhone's screen).

The iPhone has built-in Wi-Fi, with which it is able to access the World Wide Web (through a wireless network) via a modified version of the Safari web browser. The iPhone is also able to connect to the web through AT&T's EDGE network, but is not able to utilize AT&T's3G/HSDPA network; Steve Jobs mentioned at the Keynote presentation that 3G support would be a future feature of a new version. The use of the EDGE network instead of 3G has been criticized by analysts. When the user is not in a Wi-Fi hot spot, the iPhone's network connection will use the older EDGE network, which, before the launch, reviewers found that the EDGE network was "excruciatingly slow," with the iPhone taking as long as 100 seconds to download the Yahoo! home page for the first time. Immediately before the launch the observed speed of the network increased to almost 200 kbit/s This is probably due to the new "Fine EDGE" upgrades AT&T has been making to their network prior to the launch.
The web browser displays full web pages as opposed to simplified pages as on most non-smartphones. The iPhone does not support Flash or Java technology. Web pages may be viewed in portrait or landscape mode and support automatic zooming by "pinching" or double-tapping images or text. The iPhone also has Bluetooth 2.x+EDR built in. It works with wireless earpieces that use Bluetooth 2.0 technology.
An agreement between Apple and Google provides for access to a specially modified version of Google Maps — in map, local list, or satellite form, optimized for the iPhone, which also provides optional real-time traffic information. During the product's announcement, Jobs demonstrated this feature by searching for nearby Starbucks locations and then placing a prank call to one with a single tap

Apple has confirmed that an optimized version of the Mac OS X operating system (without unnecessary components) runs on the iPhone, although differences between the operating system (OS X) running on Macs and the iPhone have not been officially explained. As iPhone's CPU is an ARM processor, the version of OS X that runs on iPhone differs from the desktop version in that it is written for the ARM instruction set architecture (ISA) instead of the x86 and PowerPC ISAs that the Mac version of OS X is written for.
The operating system takes up about 700 MB of the device's total 4 or 8 GB storage.[9] It will be capable of supporting bundled and future applications from Apple.
Apple intends to offer a smooth method for updating the iPhone's operating system, in a similar fashion to the way that Mac OS X and iPods are updated, and touts this as an advantage compared to other cell phones.[19]
Widgets, similar to the ones available in Mac OS X v10.4's Dashboard, are included on the iPhone. They include Stocks and Weather widgets.
The iPhone's version of OS X includes the software component "Core Animation" which is responsible for the smooth animations used in its user interface. Core Animation has not yet been released for Macs, but will be part of Mac OS X v10.5.
The build of OS X on at least one iPhone is "OS X 1.0 (1A543a)", as seen in a crash log for the MobileMail application.[20][21] The application apparently runs as the superuser.

The phone has several applications located at iPhone's "Home" Screen, including YouTube. It will stream the videos over Wi-Fi and/or EDGE after encoding them using QuickTime's H.264 codec, to which YouTube has converted about 10,000 videos. They are expected to convert the entire catalog by Fall 2007. As a result, the YouTube application on iPhone can only view a certain selection of videos from the site.[citation needed]
At WWDC 2007 on June 11, 2007 Apple Inc. announced that the iPhone will support third party "applications" via the Safari web browser, that share the look and feel of the iPhone interface. The applications must be created in Ajax or JavaScript to maintain device security.[22] The iPhone cannot install full programs from anyone but Apple.[23] Steve Jobs has referenced full programs being created by parties other than Apple[24][25]
Analysts also claim that iPhone lacks any type of firewall, which some experts claim is posing a data security risk.[26] It is not confirmed by Apple or by independent analysts that used the actual device for tests that it doesn't have a firewall. Daniel Eran writes: "Dulaney doesn't know if the iPhone has a firewall, has no reason to suggest that its installation of OS X wouldn't offer a firewall, and offers no reasons why a mobile device would need a firewall anyway

Battery

The iPhone features a built-in rechargeable battery that is not intended to be user-replaceable, similar to existing iPods. Once the battery reaches the end of its life time the phone will need to be returned to Apple and replaced for a fee.[9] The cost of replacing the battery is US$79 and US$6.95 for shipping.[28] The battery is stated to be capable of providing up to seven hours of video, six hours of web browsing, or eight hours of talk time (depending on configuration). The battery life for music playing is stated to be 24 hours.[3] The battery also allows for up to 250 hours of standby time.
The Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights, a consumer advocate group, has sent a complaint to Apple and AT&T over the fee that consumers have to pay to get the battery replaced. In addition, the scheme and pricing was not made known to buyers until after the product was launched

There are new headphones which are similar to those of current iPods, but which incorporate a microphone. Calls can be answered and ended by squeezing a bud, toggling the microphone. iPhone with GPS

Apparently the next generation iPhone which will probably be announced in spring 2008 at Macworld will incorporate a SiRF Star III chip or something along those lines. According to a source:

Apple is certain to use a chipset using Assisted GPS technology, which cuts down the time needed to determine a location using GPS. (A-GPS) is necessary in urban areas with tall buildings or locations with heavy tree cover.

A-GPS helps the device for a fast satellite fix by getting some help from cell phone towers. SiRF’s press release from February of this year does talk about a collaboration with NXP Semiconductors to speed the development of cost-effective location-aware 3G wireless handsets though. Something to think about…

Apple confirms better than expected battery-life for the iPhone

Apple announced today more detailed specifications regarding the battery-life of the iPhone. In a surprising move, the company now gives much better numbers than it initially did in January when the device was introduced.
The updated official battery-life numbers are now the following:
- 8 hours of talk-time (formerly 5 hours)- 6 hours of Internet use (formerly 5 hours)- 7 hours of video playback (formerly 5 hours)- 24 hours of audio playback (formerly 16 hours)- 250 hours (or more than 10 days) of standby time
The company also added the device will feature “Durable Glass Top Surface”, replacing plastic front protection with optical-quality glass which is clearer and less scratch-sensitive.
The news come as clear confirmation to an exclusive report MacScoop had published on April the 19th, citing source who had the chance to use the iPhone for longer than just a few minutes. The source claimed that the true iPhone battery life would actually “surprise us” by exceeding initially announced battery-life. The report contradicted other reports on the Internet which claimed it would disappoint us.
With this announcement, Apple squashes one of the biggest concerns analysts and commentators had regarding the iPhone. The company also showed a bit of openness to developers, during the World Wide Developers Conference’s kick-off keynote last week, by announcing support for online Web 2.0 applications, through a full Safari engine port residing in the device. Though many developers still believe Apple can do much better in this area.
The last point remaining in question is the quality of the touch-screen keyboard the iPhone offers. Many believe that a touch-screen keyboard will never deliver the same experience as a physical one. Only time will tell if people can actually get used to it.
The iPhone will be made available in the U.S.A on June 29 at Apple and AT&T retail stores. It should be released in Europe by the end of this year and in Asia in early next year.

Apple stores to offer 25 iPhone accessories near launch

Apple Inc.’s retail stores plan to offer iPhone shoppers around two dozen accessories for the multi-function handset at or around the time the device goes on sale later this week,
The majority of those products will likely consist of third party cases and protective gear, which are amongst the simplest for outside firms to develop given their limited exposure to the Apple handset thus far.
In addition to those third party iPhone accessories, Apple will offer at least three of its own:
A stereo headset with mic, which will be included with each iPhone, will also sell separately for $29. Meanwhile, the company’s little-mentioned Bluetooth headset will reportedly fetch a whopping $129, making it one of the most expensive on the market. Apple will also sell a white iPhone dock.
Over the past couple of weeks, AT&T retail stores have also turned up periodic shipments of third party iPhone accessories. Again, these products consist primarily of iPhone cases and protective gear.
In particular, two DLO cases — one called Jam Jacket and another called HipCase — where spotted and photographed over the weekend.

Will the iPhone be used as Apple TV Remote?

So genesis of the iPhone was sometime back in 2005, right? Interestingly, Apple happened to file a continuation on a patent application around that time covering a Universal Remote for controlling a number of home entertainment devices.

Crazy? Perhaps using your $500 (or $1,936 depending on how you do the math :O ) iPhone to control your flat panel is not logical, but Apple does have a fantastic track record with integration between Macs and digital cameras, printers and other periphery devices.
A bit of detail from the patent:
1. A universal remote control, comprising:a display screen, a user input mechanism a processing unit configured to display information on the display screen and to accept selection data from the user input mechanism; and a wireless communication mechanism configured to provide communications between the processing unit and an appliance; wherein the processing unit is configured to accept display information from the appliance for display on the display screen; wherein the processing unit is further configured to accept information entered through the user input mechanism for communication to the appliance; wherein the wireless communication mechanism is configured to periodically broadcast a discovery command; and wherein if an appliance is in range, the appliance responds to the discovery command to facilitate communication of the display information from the appliance to the universal remote control; wherein a set of standard graphical representations of appliance-control mechanisms is stored in the appliance and can be sent over a wireless communications link to the universal remote control for display to the user.
OK, so most everything is controlled by IR (and it makes no sense for the iPhone to have IR), but bucking that trend is Samsung’s recently rolled out Bluetooth HD TV for $4600, which it claims is the world’s first.
Apple has proven time and again that it thinks about ease of use. Toying with some code to turn an iPhone into the end-all of universal remotes by trying it out on the Apple TV would be the beginning of resolving one of the greatest problems in modern consumer electronic times (then again, maybe not, but it would be cool).

Giant Apple iPhone Displays at Apple Stores

It appears that Apple iPhone displays are going up at Apple Stores. TUAW notes that a “large, covered rectangular display” appeared at the 5th Avenue Apple Store tonight.
They’ve also posted a small gallery of images of the shrouded display. Apple Store employees were reportedly unable to give out any further information.
We’d heard rumors that Apple Stores would be getting more promotional displays this Friday, and there had been hopes (though unconfirmed) that iPhone rate plans details would also be announced at that time.

First iPhone line forms in Manhattan

Two individuals can now flaunt the crown of “the very first iPhone line waiters”, having camped out Monday morning on a Midtown Manhattan sidewalk more than four days before the Apple device is due to go on sale.
At 5:00 a.m. on Monday, the two iPhone enthusiasts stationed themselves outside Apple’s Fifth Avenue flagship shop in New York City’s Manhattan borough, assuring their first and second places in line. Yes — they plan to remain there till Friday evening and are seeking food and MetroCards as donations.
The two were first discovered by local blog site Vicarious Music , which spotted them Monday afternoon holding signs pronouncing their early arrival.
In a later interview with Gizmodo, the head of the line (known thus far only as Greg) explained that he was a single retiree, affording him all the time in the world to ‘get his iPhone.’ Greg’s plan after buying iPhone? To “take a look at it” and “see how it works.” His left-hand man remains unidentified.Both campers are equipped for the remaining four days of the wait with soft seats, soft drinks, and coolers full of grub — including, as the interview (below) reveals, at least one bright yellow banana.

AT&T: iPhone sales limited to ‘one per person’

Wireless carrier AT&T said Wednesday it plans to limit iPhone sales at its retail stores to ‘one per person’ on Friday — the first day the eagerly sought Apple handset is due to go on sale nationwide.
“With AT&T iPhone arriving June 29th at 6 p.m. in AT&T retail stores, the wait is almost over. Use our online store locator to find the closest AT&T store that sells Apple iPhone (limit one per person),” the company wrote in an email to subscribers. “We’ll show you maps, directions, and everything you need to get your hands on an iPhone as quickly as possible.”
Apple retail stores are also expected to limit the number of iPhones its shopper can purchase on the first day, though it has not said how many that will be. Obviously, both AT&T and Apple are in the business of improving their bottom lines, and will ease the limitation over time.
For its part, Apple will also be making iPhone available for purchase from its online store, where it’s unlikely to impose limits.

Sources add that the AT&T iPhone supports Microsoft Exchange servers, adding that Apple has likely licensed Microsoft’s ActiveSync to accomplish that integration.
When asked about corporate email in a USA Today interview, Apple CEO Steve Jobs replied, “You’ll be hearing more about this in the coming weeks. We have some pilots going with companies with names you’ll recognize. This won’t be a big issue.”
Much commentary and speculation has surrounded the topic of the iPhone being a viable smart phone for businesses or whether the device will dominate only the consumer ranks.

Apple sold half a million iPhones

Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster is estimating Apple sold half a million AT&T iPhones from 6 p.m. Friday through the close of business on Sunday. With the devices going for $500 to $600, that’s around $250 to $300 million in cash changing hands, depending on the mix of 4GB and 8GB units sold.With margins on the device in the <20-50%> range (probably closer to the lower end), that leaves an estimated $50 to $150 million in profit.
Not a bad weekend for Apple.
